This is a three-day hands-on, field-based workshop designed for practitioners to learn how to interact with and manage beavers that are occupying sensitive areas and to relocate them to areas where they are wanted for stream restoration. ​This course is designed for individuals and groups who are interested in live trapping and relocating beaver for stream restoration. It is anticipated that this course will meet the training requirements of the State of Utah’s live beaver trapping certification. ​

The workshop will cover the three core components of translocation: (1) live trapping;  (2) holding/handling, and (3) release. This workshop will count as training for participants who wish to become certified by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources at live trapping.

PRimary learning outcomes

This course is designed for individuals and groups who are interested in live trapping and translocating beaver for stream restoration purposes. Specifically, participants will come away with: 

• Ability to work with landowners in addressing and/or mitigating concerns about damage from beaver activity (e.g. see guidelines from Beaver Institute)
• Knowledge of techniques for live-trapping beaver, types of beaver traps and experience in how to properly set them (e.g. see Chapter 5 of Beaver Restoration Guidebook). 
• Application of best practices to safely transport beaver. 
• Exposure to key considerations in beaver handling and care while in holding
• Introduction to adaptive management as it applies to beaver translocation and identification of key attributes for monitoring beaver health and vitals while in captivity, versus assessing beaver activity post release.
• Ability to select appropriate relocation areas for release and prepare those sites for release

Meeting time and place

We will be meeting  at 9 am on Tuesday April 2, 2019, at the Fluvial Habitat Center (FHC) on the campus of Utah State University (see map below). The FHC is located on the bottom floor of the Eccles Conference Center, in room 102.  Here are directions.

Where deep water or ponds are not already present at release sites, we build fake beaver dams for beaver to release them into. Here, crews are topping off a BDA built a year ago before releasing a family into it.
