John Day Workshop Schedule - July 24 - 26
Day 1 - Tuesday July 24th
Lessons from Beaver in Restoring Stream and Riparian Process and Function Morning 9 am- 12 pm - Classroom - Grant County Municipal Airport Our morning classroom session will consist of presentations and discussion focusing on the role that beavers play in altering hydrogeomorphic function, and how learning from beaver may allow us to scale stream and restoration actions to meet widespread degradation of land and riverscapes. Afternoon 12 pm- 5 pm - Field locations near John Day During the afternoon we will depart to the field where participants will tour nearby restoration sites, and engage in exercises that solidify the concepts and ideas covered in the morning session. Attendees will also gain an increased understanding of the methods used by nature's most accomplished engineers. |
Day 2 - Wednesday July 25th
Practical Considerations in Beaver Based Restoration Implementation Morning 9 am- 12 pm - Classroom - Grant County Municipal Airport Our morning classroom session will consist of presentations and discussion focused on practical considerations in implementation of beaver based restoration including structure installation, adaptive management, permitting, cost considerations, and application of other "Cheap and Cheerful" restoration approaches. Afternoon 12 pm- 5 pm - Field locations near John Day During the afternoon we will depart to the field to tour nearby restoration sites and engage in exercises covering project planning and monitoring of BDA restoration projects. |
Day 3 - Thursday July 26th
Beaver Dam Analog Project Implementation All Day 9 am- 4 pm - Field - Bridge and Bear Creek Mitchell, OR The final day will be spent entirely in the field. Participants will meet at the Painted Hills National Reserve Picnic Area near Mitchell, OR, where we will begin the day discussing long-term expectations for beaver based restoration by touring the Bridge Creek IMW restoration project. Following our tour, we will visit an active BDA restoration project on Bear Creek where participants will get hands on experience in BDA construction, site safety, post-pounder operation, project design, and construction of other low-cost restoration structures. |
